The African continent continues to attract substantial investments into its telecommunications markets. Both continental and overseas investors still see value and potential in this market as evidenced by the billions of investments that continue to flow into the sector.
Mobile content expected to show strong growth in SA

Findings from BMI-T’s Mobile Media report reveal that mobile content is expected to show strong growth over the next five years. The segment recorded a compound annual growth rate of 33% for the combined revenue from mobile music, mobile games and mobile TV, which is expected to reach R558 million by 2013. This figure is calculated specifically for revenue from paying users, and does not include illegal downloads or mobile advertising revenues.
IT services market in good shape to face challenges ahead

The South African IT services market reached a value of R27 billion in 2008, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 25.2%. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.4% over the five-year forecast period, reaching a total of R38.6 billion by 2013.
The three largest players have maintained their positions between 2007 and 2008, with the largest player, Dimension Data, accounting for 14.1% of the total South African IT services market in 2007, followed by Business Connexion and GijimaAst with 10.7% and 8.3% respectively.

Nokia and Samsung brands are dominating the handset market in SA, with a combined market share estimate of between 70% and 80%. This is one of the findings from research done by BMI-TechKnowledge in the Consumer Digital Media programme.
In the Digital Lifestyle Predictor (DLP), a survey of over 800 consumers from metro areas who have more than R8 000 household income, consumer households were classified into four distinct Digital Lifestyle Measure (DLM) segments based on their ownership of digital goods and general orientation towards digital lifestyle.
